    junkyard 510 build

I'm just going to document the build here in this thread. not sure what speed this thread will grow, but i'm just gonna do it one post at a time.

the car had been sitting abandoned on an old military base for over 10 years. moderate rust. minor dents. no motor. 79 five speed from a 210 i think.

found the car at one of the local wrecking yards. they had already sold the 2.0 out of it and the car was mostly complete . it had only been there for 2 days and hadn't been picked over. all the trim was intact and window rubber is decent

    jan 25-28.

towed the car home and promptly built a car dolly. pulled out the trans. pulled everything out of the engine bay and pressure washed the hell out of it. ordered a bunch of rust fighting stuff from eastwood.

santa clawz came early (or a month late).

went and picked up a few used goodies from my friend who's had about 7 scca 510 ITC cars.

    here's the score:
    front valance
2 unrusted undented 68/69 fenders with turns and emblems.
front spindles with old ground control sleeves and eibach springs with DPR camber adjusters (need to order the top portion of the plates)
some mystery rear lowering/high rate springs
pair of used carrera shocks for the rear
a rear subframe modified for the race cars to allow toe and camber adjustment
    starter motor
webber 40dcoe side draft + manifold
    4 -1 header
    1.8 head
    new fuel pump
    misc stock carb + mani
    misc brackets and linkages

and, to top it all off,
a balanced, blueprinted, windage tray'd, crankscraper'd , rebello built 1.6 ITC engine with race clutch from a wrecked track car!

    I'm gonna have a busy month =)))))

    Interesting:

    1. I would have never thought to build a dolly out of 4 X 4s and
    2. I thought junk yards could not sell whole cars?

the vertical load is carried by 4 x 6's. there are metal plates on top to prevent the wood from splitting.

the 2x4's are all linked to the 4x6 with 4 through-bolts each to stop the tendency to skew , and the 4x6 is also side-braced by another layer of 2x4 to prevent any torque caused by the offset of the caster.

each caster is rated for 900lbs. the dolly is solid as fuck.

junkyards can sell you complete cars. most places don't want to deal with the paper work, and they can make more money on parts. the independent place i go to knows me from ten years of picking parts, so he has no problem selling me a car and transferring the paperwork from the lien (as he acquired it)

for sure. I'm now in the monterey bay. I've taken my starion to a couple of the JNC meets. I guess once this is together I'll have to do double duty. =)

If you are in Monterey, you should come out to the NORCAL UFO autoXs at Marina airport. We have 4 regular running 510s, a couple of Zs, my roadster and then the various drifters in their 240sxs. A Starion would be cool to see out there.

By the way, NOR Cal UFO = NorCal United 510 Owners club 8)
