    Is L24 an Interference Engine?

    Since I have it, some serious clicking is audible from my Laurels L24S. I adjusted the valves but noticed a fairly loose timing chain. Since I would have to remove auxiliaries and pulleys to rectify this, it might be a while till I have the time. Is it well to drive on with it, or is the L24 a interference engine and i would cock it up, if the chain gives in?

    I played with the l20s for a bit and was told they were an interference motor, but that wouldnt be a clicking. valve/piston interference is waay worse than a click.

    And in case im wrong, lets call this a bump.

    Depending on how loud the tick is. It could be valve tick which is mostly caused by lack of oil to the head. This is more of bottom end stuff but it also could be rod knock if its loud.

    Can you hear that click all the time? or just when you rev the engine?

    On my diesel Laurel (LD28) I had this kind of click and it turned out that the timing chain was a bit loose. But I've been able to adjust the tensioner with a screwdriver.

    I've never seen an L24 with the rocker cover off but there should be a tensioner somewhere.

    It's inside the timing cover, sort of behind the crank pulley. :wink:

    The chain tensioner is usually not adjustable, it's spring loaded so it's always tight. Most likely the chain guides are wasted.

    Whether or not the engine is an interference design is really not important. Never once seen or even heard of a chain failure in a (normally driven) L-series engine. That shouldn't be a major concern. :tu:

    Yes, they are interference engines and here's the proof:



    All 6 exhaust valves tapped the top of the pistons at over 9500 rpm...
