'87 Mazda Étude + Familia Cabriolet (not mine)

I'm doing some research for my website about the history in Japan. And I thought I knew all the cars Mazda have had but one was a big suprise for me; a hatchback/coupe sort based on the 323/Familia from 1987!

Its also in the new time table that Mazda made:

Its not an oldtimer and its not mine but I thought it was nice to share it with you guys. I'm not really into 80s cars but I think this looks quite cool!!

There are a few Etude owners on the AMAZD New Zealand forum. one theory is that the Etude was an experiment for the Eunos Presso and Eunos 100 liftbacks which followed, and it was also a slightly more 'luxurious' car inside compared to the Familia (which it shared its chassis with).

(slightly off topic) Mazda also produced a Familia Cabriolet around the same time. Just like the Etude it was only sold in Japan.

Yeah the Etude was just a bit more sporty and luxurious then the Familia 3-doors hatchback. The Cabriolet is nice too indeed. Official pics:

In my country there is one driving around. Imported of course. I will find the pics..

yeah I owned one briefly - it served as a parts/donor car for my brother's Ford Laser TX3 turbo (another Mazda Japan special) which shared all of its mechanicals.

i've pretty much owned all of the various BF chassis Familias/Lasers both FWD and 4WD and I wouldn't have called the Cabriolet as sporty as the top of the range hatches... the lack of roof really made its presence felt.

Cool. Have New Zealand and Australia always been such Mazda country's? Here they had a great year in 1991 en 1992 cause of the 626 Hatchback (Efini MS-6) and 323F (Astina) but now they sell like crap..

My Sister had an Etude, here in NZ

They were basically an over sized 323, Import only.
You dont see many around now as they were never that well liked compared to the sporter Famillia/323.

If you want a rare/strange 90s Mazda try the Milla Cycle engine in the Bigger MS8-The worst engine ever.

MS-8 ? That was only with a 2.0 and 2.5 V6 in Japan. The 2.3 Miller Cycle Engine was in the Xedos 9 (Europe) / Millenia (VS) / Eunos 800

Sorry I got confused with the ms-8 and the Sentia/Millenia.
Every miller cycle engine I ran into was poked they had a major design flaw as well as the super charged diesel engines in the Capella Wagons.
