    Minilite Turbo 78 Accord

    I picked up an old issue of Car and Driver that said "TURBO ACCORD" on the cover, and the magazine was dated 1978. I had to see what was up with that, so I scanned the article and thought I'd share it with you guys.

    Loving this site by the way! So many clean old cars all over the place here, I can't get enough! Just subscribed to the magazine and bought the back-issues as well! Can't wait to get them!

    I've never seen or heard about that thing, pretty sweet! ! I would love to get my hands on that turbo kit, 14psi on a stock block must of been a blast till the pistons gave out !! Does anyone have pics of the jackson racing turbo kit for the ek1's? Or pics of any early model turbo honda's would be cool.................

    I agree! More turbo info is necessary! Here's the JR turbo kit from roadsailing.com



    It's not really that compilcated. Not even an intercooler, just a turbo sucking through what looks like an SU carburetor or something similar. No turbo lag with that setup!

    Turbo Accord (1st gen)

    Downunder, left to my own devices, I did a turbo conversion. Bought the car new (non-cvcc) in Oct '77; did the conversion with about 35,000km on the clock, late in '78. Set-up was not unlike the photo posted. (I have a couple of photo's; how do I upload?). Intake thru big Donaldson air-filter, SU carburettor to Schwitzer turbo. Exhaust had home-made adjustable waste-gate, straight thru exhaust to one muffler just before the tail. Regularly pushed 11-14lbs of boost with no problems. (The engine already had some k's on it so I think that helped). Had no problems getting to red-line in 5th gear; speedo needle would point vertically down to the center service reminder window. You do the math; it's a long time ago, but I think that meant 180~200kmh (108~120mph). The car was fine as a daily drive (a little noisier) and fuel economy was obviously worse. No chassis modifications except I ran Yokohama 205/60 HR13 tires. (The wheel arch flanges were rolled in to minimize rubbing.) Finally after an argument with my girfriend, I wound the waste-gate up to give 19lbs boost. With some very aggressive driving, I blew a piston; Not a major drama. Replaced the piston & 2 sets of rings in-car. Soon after, I exchanged the car for a new 1980 one, which I left stock.

    Wow you did a turbo back in the day? Any special jetting to the carb? I assume you did a suckthru as well? That's pretty badass. Any idea how much horsepower you got from the 14psi?

    Didn't Dyno it, so no idea about power; I remember I was able to slip the clutch in 3rd gear at over 100kmh! No special jets on the SU (yes, suck thru). How do you upload photo's?
