Jalopnik has no idea what they are talking about. (R32 impor

    Short except:
I went up one day to see the car, and drove it the hell off their lot and home to my house. They had to forfeit their import bond on it with NHTSA. I found out that they had declared it as a Canadian market car with their EPA customs declaration.
    Not legal.

Did they not do 1 minute of research? A car cannot be imported LEGALLY until it hits the date of manufacture. GTRs did not start manufacture until May. This car was declared a CDM car when it's JDM. All of which is a perfect example of an ILLEGALLY imported GTR.

I post this because there have been multiple topics here about importing JDM cars, this is how NOT to do it. His car can now be seized at any time and destroyed not to mention the fact that the importer "lied" (or was ignorant) to the US government. If anyone is thinking of trying this method, don't.

Motorex (or w/e that company was called) years ago did shady shit like this to import things like R33s. People had their cars taken from their houses by customs agents and destroyed.

I don't think any real car person thinks otherwise. They are simply staffed with journo students, pushing clicks with old rehashes, fake headlines, and exaggerations. Not sure if there's a single real car person on staff, certainly no one with any car experience as an editor, and I think only one contributor (deMuro) who has had anything real to do with cars ever. The rest is just for giggles, which of course keeps me coming back, giving them clicks, and like Fox 'News' can be read for pure entertainment with very little grounding in reality. Prime cuts from memory:

'Tokyo Wan Aqualine is a road to nowhere, and a waste of money', reality is I use it every weekend to save a three hour round trip - all for \800.

'The dashboard support column kept getting in the way, no idea why it was there', reality is that was the steering column of a kei truck.

'Some idiot who does not like trucks, keyed mine while I was at a concert', reality my GF sat on it an scratched with jeans zipper.

'All Japanese love tentacle '... etc. Neko.

Jalopnik is more of a fluff/entertainment site focused on cars than a "factual" site...part of the gawker steal articles from other sites network. It's good for Russian dashcam clips and the ocassional hooning video, at least.

Jalopnik's not all bad...they can be a very entertaining blog. They are wrong about this though...as is most the rest of the internet.

I did a write-up countering their article on Oppositelock, the user based commenting/micro-blogging platform.

You can see my take here:

"People had their cars taken from their houses by customs agents and destroyed." This is whats wrong here in the U.S. in my opinion. If I buy the car legally with all paper work to prove it, Don't you dare take my vehicle away from me. I don't care what issue they have, I used my money not the governments so they could take it away. I feel like its a waste of government time and money (my stupid tax dollars) for them to tell me that I cant buy the car of my dream.

I'm not sure which car you're talking about, the '90 R32 GT-R nismo which the article is about, or the recent '89 R32 GT-R brought in from Canada.

In the former case, Sean had all his ducks in a row and petitioned the NHTSA on Show or Display for the car (since the nismo, although not being much different than a base model, was produced in very small numbers).
In the latter case, yes the '89 brought over from Canada on the 1st was improperly filed since the requirements for manufacture date were not complied with; the owner relied on a CBP official's suggestion that they would be accepting only model year instead of complying with the regulation. The buyer filed the car as a "1989" on the HS-7 and did not expand on it, but the VIN would reveal a much later car (they actually started producing the base GT-Rs in August at a rate of about 1000 per month). The likelihood of his car being seized after having both HS-7 and 3520-1 is pretty low (higher now with the grapevine), but yes there is always the chance that the Gov't would refuse to grandfather the car and decide to set a standard to the regulation. My opinion: It's not worth it to risk your car to have it 8-12 months earlier. Just wait.

The Gov't does what it wants, and if you're not savvy enough to ask the right questions, know the regulations, know the paperwork you need, and know what you're getting into before you buy the car, then you probably deserve a visit from ICE. They're very interested in knowing how a 3000+lb hunk of metal gets into the country without CBP's notice as this can transition far beyond cars.

MotoRex cars are legal. I had one in Ca registered and daily driven for 2 years before moving back to Japan. KAIZO cars are illegal and imported in the same manner as described in the original post. More than a few 25 year old BNR32's have legally been imported over the last month or two. Ca smog is still an issue unless you pay the extra $8k for that mod and certification.

Like I say in my post above, they may have imported them with the correct paperwork, but zero R32 GTRs are 25 years old yet and most discerning customs agents know this. That is regardless of what your Canadian title says. It's mindless to chance it.

No one really cares who's first, except maybe the Jan 1 goober, and he just highlighted the fact that they're not 25 yet. Mine will be good to go come October but it won't come back for another year most likely.
