Trans / Axle codes for LSD...??

    Hey guys,

So here comes my first rookie question... ops:
On the VIN plate of my newly acquired TE61 the Trans / Axle code is "T50 / T283".
I've been doing some searching on the net, and I believe that last "3" means that my Trueno has a LSD from factory.
Could anyone please confirm or un-confirm this for me...??

    YAY!!! :P
Thx mate! You just made me a very, very happy man...
After all, life is barely worth living without a limited-slip diff!!

Would that be a 25% LSD then??

    T = 6.7" crown diameter, 28 = 4.3 gear ratio

    Cool.
    So 1 : 4.3 gear ratio with a LSD.
But how much does that LSD lock??

will depend on wear and tear - how its been used , oil changes, what oil has been used , reshimming ...

no exact figure. Just see how you go

Not sure I get it...?? :?
Surely it's not a viscous coupling LSD that they used back in the late 70's?
I would have thought in was a clutch type LSD, and they would be built to lock up to a max. percentage. Often a max of 25% seems a good number for a performance orientated road car. Around 40% is getting very driver-orientated. Much more than that and you're really looking at a rally and/or autocross car.
With my old BMW 2002's the first owner could tick a box, pay a bloody fortune and decide whether he wanted a 25% LSD or a 40% LSD...

It's an old car presumably owned by an enthusiast previously so anything could be in there. Not necessarily what was in it when new.

All sorts of aftermarket options are available nowadays.

Okay, so just for the sake of arguement. Let's just say that the car still has it's original LSD as fitted from Toyota in 1978, and let's just say that the previous owners have always treated the LSD to correct Hypoid oil and not misused the LSD (HeHe... as if...!?!? ). Then what kind of lock-up should I expect from the LSD?

Or even, how much lock would the standard "T283" have offered from new?

Heya anders, have you tried a search of the toymods.org forums? I remember seeing a breakdown of the various final drive options for the celicas, might have one for the corolla/trueno as well.

If not, you've got some carpark testing to do...
