    Source for complete exhaust systems

    Hi all,

I searched but didn't find any conclusive information. Is there a preferred source when it comes to replacing 'complete' factory exhausts? I'd like to get a complete front to back system and not having much luck. I'm not as concerned about header, downpipe or cat - as those seem to be readily available. I'm more concerned about cat-back. I can't seen to find any place that sells a complete front to end exhaust or at least from cat to back.

I'm not looking for anything fancy or special - stock specs are fine, and preferred. This is for a 79 TE51.

Worse case scenario I can get custom tubing bent but I'd prefer to just have something I can buy and install myself. Anyone know where to get complete or cat-back systems?

    thanks in advance.

IIRC, good, complete cat-back systems from Japan such as HKS didn't really start coming in until the mid-1980s. I think the AE86 was one of the first. These were the best since they were aluminized and had a resonator that looked just like a cat.

But, for earlier cars, there was Monza (crap), Anza, Pacesetter (another division of Monza that was crap). I doubt you will find any of these unless it is NOS stuff because these were usually just coated with cheap black paint (not even heat resistent stuff). And even if you do, I don't think you really want them, unless you are looking for "period correct" pieces.

What was usually done was to take your car to your local muffler shop and have them custom bend a 2 or 2 1/4 inch system. Those off-the-shelf systems usually had the same diamter tube as the stock system with their trademark mufflers.

Yes. I remember back then just being able to go to pep boys and such and just have exhausts put on. I did also at one point install a custom one around 87 on the toyota I had then. It seems even harder to find them now unless I go the custom route. I had hoped new manufacturers would have come online by now with bolt in options but I guess not. I have a few more places to check before going custom but most likely I will probably wind up custom bending some tubes ...

Yeah... It seems like the only bolt-on systems you can get even now are for the same cars you could get back then like the 240Zs, 200SXs, AE86s. It seems like all someone did was dig out the old tooling and plans from 30 years ago and started production again..
