    w58 shifter question

alright toyota heads i have a question for you all..... i have a w58 out of an sc300 which has the rear facing plate for the shifter assembly. I am installing the 2jz into my first gen cressida and from my research i need a plate off the mid 80s celica supras. i bought the plate, but when i disassembled the one on the trans, the shifter fork is bolted in and it probably wont clear the mid mount plate.

so how do i remove the shifter fork? it looks sort of pressed in but I'm not 100% sure.

You need to remove the entire rear cover of the transmission... The part the shifter housing is bolted to. There should be six bolts or so to remove and then the rear half of the transmission will slide backwards. You can then remove the shifter fork. You can then slide your shifter fork on and bolt the transmission back together. It is really easier to start with a W58 out of a MkII supra or same vintage celica if you can find one.

you can sell the box and find another, or trade with someone for the box you need possibly. this happens more often than you might think and it happens regardless of what car the trans was bought for.

    ok so new question...

the trans clears the tunnel just fine the way it is... but the stock swan style shifter arm hits the interior plastic.... could i just find a short shifter or another style shifter off something else that will work?

it barely hits but its annoying
