Mitsubishi announced today that they were all but killing off their Ralliart division due to the global economic slump. In honor of that once great performance arm, let’s take a look at the triple diamond mafia’s flagship nostalgic, the Galant GTO.Mitsubishi actually exported it officially to the UK of all places, and JNC reader dwlee even dug up the 1976 brochure.
Note that the official name is the Colt Galant GTO 2000GSR, and that the UK subsidiary is simply called The Colt Car Company. The catalog makes a big show of the 125hp 2.0-liter four’s counterbalancing silent shaft technology. And we also now know that the styling aesthetic is something called “Dynawedge.” How cool is that? (more…)
Poor Sgt. Daimon. It seems that no matter what TV series he’s in, he is always called upon to dispatch a ridiculously over-armed bad guy with a single shot worthy of Vasily Zaytsev, after which he must solemnly watch their last gasps from behind his aviator shades. (more…)
If Lord Humungus had been motoring through New South Wales in the mid 1980s, he would have encountered the Australian Federal Police in one of these babies — a Mitsubishi Cordia Turbo! We already know it makes great sci-fi artwork, but these front-wheel-drive hot hatches were apparently mean enough for the Main Force Patrol too! (more…)
MSN UK Picks Top 50 Japanese Cars: So another media outlet tackles the question of the top Japanese cars of all time. Since it was a British outlet, we’ll go with the 1965 Daihatsu Compagno, which was apparently the first Japanese car imported to the UK. There seem to be some, uh, glaring absences. No mention of the hakosuka Skyline, Mazda RX-3, AE86, and such. See for yourself.
Welcome to Part 2 of our 2010 New Year Meeting coverage. JNC operative Derek Y. has sent us photos of Toyotas, Mazdas and Mitsubishis and a solitary Honda. We know you’re eager to get to the eye candy so let’s jump right in. (more…)
So as we’re sure you all know, the biggest Japanese kyuusha show of the year took place last weekend. The 2010 New Year Meeting has come and gone, and we just received an incoming transmission beamed across the Pacific from our operative Derek Y! (more…)
As we headed down to the monthly South Bay meet in Torrance last Friday, we ran into the hakosuka and kenmeri Skylines from Right Hand Drive Japan. Matched in white paint and gunmetal Wats, they were a sight to behold in LA traffic. (more…)
Continuing simultaneously on our Cars of Pure Evil theme and our commitment to bring you more triple diamond coverage, here’s JNC reader Komeuppance’s Mitsubishi Starion. The strut casings have been sliced and the exhaust probably sparks at speed. If this car were any lower, it’d be in Hell itself. Appropriately, his license plate reads “SLAMMD”. And oh yeah, it’s his daily driver. (more…)
Most of us only know actor Ken Takakura from Ridley Scott’s 1989 film Black Rain. He played a cop, but in Japan Takakura is as synonymous with yakuza movies as DeNiro is with Italian mob flicks. Therefore, it’s only fitting that Takakura’s tough-guy persona was conscripted by the automotive arm of the Mitsubishi zaibatsu to move some Galant Sigmas. We can totally see him behind the wheel of Mitsu’s big sedan, on the way to shake down some pachinko parlor managers. (more…)
We’re always looking for Mitsubishi-related posts for the all-important job of keeping both Matt and the triple diamond mafia happy. To be honest, there isn’t much to this late-70s commercial for the Galant Sigma Eterna and Galant Lambda Eterna. But the rousing disco score and parking garage hoonage somehow make us feel nostalgic for RWD Mitsus and cop shows, so we can dig it!
Bonus points for ID-ing the background cars at 0:07.
