Friday Video: Kyushakai Drifters

toyota_soarer_yanki_shakotan2There’s been a recent spate of videos in which cars built with old school bosozoku style take on the decidedly new art of professional drifting. Take a gander at the exquisite airbrushed paint job, for example, captured at Ebisu by our friend Alexi at Nori Yaro. Moments later, the Toyota Soarer it belonged to went full-on sideways out on the track, putting those gorgeous matching SSR MkIIs in jeopardy. (more…)

Nostalgic Drift!

Alexi, a good friend of mine runs the excellent Nori Yaro – Japan Car Life Blog. An expat Australian in Japan, Alexi’s living the life drifting and immersing himself in grassroots car culture over there.  Last weekend, he spotted this nostalgic ride at a local drift meet at Nikko Circuit. More details and pictures here.

C’mon Ben, your wagon’s cryin’ out for this treatment!!  Check out Nori Yaro too, it’s the next best thing to living there.

Cindy McCain, First Lady of Drift

If you haven’t been following the giant mudslinging contest known as the 2008 presidential campaign, consider yourself smart, as banging one’s head against a wall repeatedly does tend to kill off brain cells. However, we at JNC feel that its our duty to keep you informed, and at least one vital fact has emerged from the current election season that we’re sure will prove more important than any other issue in the history of American politics: Cindy McCain, wife of candidate John McCain, not only owns a Nissan 240SX – which is totally foxy in and of itself – but she also takes it to the track. To drift. (more…)

Sideways Sliding Celica

This has always been a dream of ours, to take one bad ass nostalgic and go drifting, one of the few motorsports where style matters just as much as speed. The problem is, we’d never have the nerve to actually do it because 1.) we can’t drift our way out of a used kleenex and 2.) we couldn’t bear to see the toll this would take on hard-to-find body panels and trim. Luckily, Hideo Itakura and HDO Racing Service have no such reservations and have been campaigning this SR20-powered Celica Liftback in Japan’s D1GP drift series. Note the intercooler masquerading as a grille. That’s total awesome right there.

E70 Corolla Drifting

Yeah, we all know the AE86 Corolla is practically synonymous with drifting, but what if you want something that stands out from the crowd? Check out the guys from MotorFix, who specialize in sliding the previous generation E70 Corollas. Naturally, they’re all powered by the 4A-GE twin-cam from the AE86, which means old school style with slightly less old school tech. Check out Auto-Otaku for lots more pics of this crew and videos too.
