Honda CR-Z Ad Glimpses Soichiro’s Genius

The Honda CR-Z went on sale in Japan last week. It may not be the long-awaited reincarnation of the CR-X, but the accompanying commercial gives us glimpses of past greats like the Super Cub, T360, S600s both roadster and coupe, and Civic. There’s even a shot of the original bullet train, the 0 Series Shinkansen. The Impossible Dream it’s not, but the sequel is rarely as good as the original.

Classic CM: Mazda Capella is Autobahn Bound

This baby was made for scaling the Alps, breezing down the Autobahn, and evoking grand helicopter tracking shots! You probably can’t even remember the last time you saw one of these on the streets, but the Japanese the rear-wheel-drive coupe the 1979 Mazda Capella, Brits refer to it as the Mazda Montrose, and we Yanks know it as the very first Mazda 626.

Finally, A Toyota Ad with Nostalgics!

Finally, an ad where Toyota honors its heritage instead of asking people to crush it. And all it took was a global recall of 8 million cars, the worst in the company’s history, and non-stop cries for the rolling heads of Toyota CEOs. Clicky click the image above to see the commercial. (more…)

Ken Takakura Wants to Put YOU in a Mitsubishi

Most of us only know actor Ken Takakura from Ridley Scott’s 1989 film Black Rain. He played a cop, but in Japan Takakura is as synonymous with yakuza movies as DeNiro is with Italian mob flicks. Therefore, it’s only fitting that Takakura’s tough-guy persona was conscripted by the automotive arm of the Mitsubishi zaibatsu to move some Galant Sigmas. We can totally see him behind the wheel of Mitsu’s big sedan, on the way to shake down some pachinko parlor managers. (more…)

Classic CM: Mitsubishi Galant Lambda & Sigma Eterna

We’re always looking for Mitsubishi-related posts for the all-important job of keeping both Matt and the triple diamond mafia happy. To be honest, there isn’t much to this late-70s commercial for the Galant Sigma Eterna and Galant Lambda Eterna. But the rousing disco score and parking garage hoonage somehow make us feel nostalgic for RWD Mitsus and cop shows, so we can dig it!

Bonus points for ID-ing the background cars at 0:07.

Classic CM: Honda Prelude’s Tach Within a Speedometer

honda prelude sn speedometer tachometer
The Honda Prelude made its debut in 1978 to compete with sport coupes like the Toyota Celica and Nissan Silvia. Honda would use the flagship model as a test bed for experimental concepts and innovative firsts. Take, for example, the concentric tach-within-a-speedometer dash in this Japanese commercial. It’s visually dazzling, which is probably why it didn’t catch on to later generations (or any other model, for that matter). The ad also makes hay of the sunroof. as the SN Prelude was also the first Japanese car to offer one that opened electronically.

Classic CM: 1977 Mazda Cosmo AP

Don’t you wish car commercials still had a unique jingle for each model? Not only did the 1977 Mazda Cosmo AP (aka Mazda RX-5) have its own signature tune, there was a whole line of fashion accessories, including a belt, tie, umbrella and man-purse. What else do you expect from the height of rotary-powered luxury?

Toyota Celica Drifts Through Norwegian Milk Ad

There have been examples of J-tin used in non-Japanese advertising before. However, this is the first time we’ve seen a Norwegian anime chick drift an A40 Toyota Celica through a wet obstacle course. These commercials sing the praises of the Q-Milk cartons’ new screw-on cap and plastic window. We can’t stop envying the car’s skinny chrome bumpers. Another ad after the jump.

Friday Video: Groovin’ With Ken, Mary and Buzz

Hey hey, Friday Video is back! In our barrage of JCCS coverage we neglected to post the solution to our last contest, where we asked readers to identify the song playing at 15:48 in Part 1 of Crayon Shin-Chan: The Adult Empire Strikes Back. If you watched the scene, in which Shin-chan’s parents are watching vintage J-tin cruise by, a clue comes in the form of a blue kenmeri Skyline.

The answer, of course, is “Ken & Mary – Ai to Kaze no Youni (Like Love and the Wind)” by the Japanese folk group Buzz. Its smooth beats were synonymous with the Nissan’s groovy, gauzy Skyline KGC110 commercials of the early 70s, so much so that the entire generation became known as the kenmeri. If you didn’t think you could find beauty in something bone stock, watch this clip. Also, this seems to be the perfect tune for an autumn drive, is it not?

Congrats to Mike C!
