Queensland All-Japanese Day Car Show

queensland_all_ajapnese_day_show
Flippin Aussies! When rx2s2 and B1500boy announced this event in the JNC Forum I couldn’t even find a website to link to. But even a self-proclaimed “non-professional” event can have 125 cars turn up to tease us Yanks with Nissan Presidents, Isuzu Bellets and rare-as-hens-teeth Mazda pickups. And this is in the middle of their winter! What gives? Click here to slowly simmer in jealousy.

Grandma Hoon in a Datsun Bluebird

datsungrandmaAustralia’s fastest grandma, Barbara Colllier, age 70, co-pilots a Datsun Bluebird with her grandson John, age 14. He needed a certified passenger to compete at Toowoomba’s Charlton Speedway but his grandfather Jack failed a mandatory medical exam. That’s when Barbara donned a full race suit and helmet to step in. Now she hits the track for four races at every meet. Good on ya, granny!

Newly Restored Datsun 510 in Fatal Crash

As many of us can attest to, nothing beats the feeling of taking a finished project on its maiden voyage. That’s why it’s important not to get carried away before you familiarize yourself with your car’s limits. Tragedy struck earlier today when a 24-year-old Australian man crashed his newly-restored 1971 Datsun 1600 (aka 510 in the US), into a tree. The driver was airlifted to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, but his 20-year-old passenger survived with minor injuries. (more…)

V8-Powered Aussie Celica in Drag

Check out this angry daruma Celica from Australia, with tube framed everything and and a V8 where the firewall should be. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea but you have to admire the craftsmanship. Take a peek under the sheetmetal after the jump. (more…)

Cars of the World Show in Oz this Weekend

Here’s a quick reminder for our Aussie JNCers in Melbourne, Australia. This Sunday November 23 is the Cars of the World show, and the featured marque is Nissan. There will be a concours type show and a charity auction. See these posts Go Baby Go and ajax240k for details.

Another Japanese Classic Car Show, in Brisbane

We yanks just had our Japanese Classic Car Show, but so did the Aussies, a week prior! Thanks to down under JNCers B1500boy and Saru for the photos. Check out the unique assortment of weird J-tin that we never recieved in the States… Datsun 240Ks, Isuzu Bellets, and weird Mazdas like the ones in this pic. Much obliged, mates.

Collecting Japanese Cars in Oz

drivekev The August 15 isue of Australia’s Sydney Morning Herald had a terrific article about collecting Japanese cars. It appears that no matter which hemisphere you’re on, the plight of the long-suffering Japanese car aficionado is same.

We’ve all experienced the sneers that Ray Ferguson, founder of the Brisbane Classic All Japanese Car Show, did when taking his ‘65 Prince Skyline to vintage car events dominated by the Big Three. That’s what prompted him to start his own damn car show.

And of course, we’d all like to have a garage full of rolling art like Sydney collectors Al Palmer (Century, Corona 1600, ‘72 Corolla and formerly 2000GT) or Mark Griffin (NSX, R32 Skyline, Series 2 RX-7 and 5 more).

And last but most definitely not least, JNC’s very own Kevin San was heavily quoted throughout the piece, tellin’ it like it is and schooling greater Sydney’s newspaper readers about nostalgics. That’s him on the cover standing next to his ‘86 Luce. Good on ya, Kev!

The article goes on to make some bold predictions about where the scene is headed, and offers up a list of top 10 collectible Japanese cars. We’ve never been a fan of these types of lists (see the ones from the Chicago Tribune or Forbes), but the rest of this article seems to accurately describe what you JNCers have known all along – that our cars are cool, as worthy of collecting as any European or American car, and about to hit the prime time, baby.

Crikey! Aussie Barn Find Reveals 297 Classics

ozbarn
We all fantasize about the barn find. For some, it’s better than winning the lottery. A big wad of cash can get you that new Maserati, but there are some cars where it’s not a matter of buying them, it’s a matter of finding them. (more…)

Mazda Car Club of Queensland Car Show

mazdaqueensland
Rotaries are big in Australia, the preferred vehicle of choice for road warriors and hoons alike. From achingly mint restorations to massive-horsepower drag monsters shod in 18-inch rims, the land down under has got it all. For a sampling of the pistonless potpourri available there, take a look at the Mazda Car Club of Queensland’s Car Show last weekend. Thanks to B1500boy from our Vegemite Sandwich Bureau, owner of over 50 nostalgic Mazdas and counting, for the pics!
