Actually I think they size them to the size of the wheels, so the car looks proportional.

Correct. They size them to the package, so a Mazda2 will be "larger" than a 4Runner. Matchbox marks the scale on the bottom but HotWheels seems to avoid this practice.

In Southern California, my local stores rarely have the good imports. To find them I go to the Frank and Sons Collector show on Wednesday and Saturday, but with +100% mark-up. Picked up the BRE Datsun 510 for $10.

Prices are approaching Tomicas, which I paid $20 for a 1600GT Celica (TA22) on Watanabe wheels. It's nice theTomicas can be removed from the box without tearing it apart. No need to buy two.

Places in the Midwest have more WMs per square mile with less population density, therefore, allowing people better odds to find stuff, with a lot less competition.

while that is true. our slower walmart stores here often skip ENTIRE WAVES of stuff because the shelves are still full of product.
I collect transformers too. mostly car-formers and it can be hard finding new stuff locally in a less dense population area.

got my Xmas Z, though! it is lovely. had to order the GT-R from ebay though.

FYI, these were $1.94 at my local Wal-Mart last week (double the price of a regular Hot Wheel), but today they were marked down to $0.90! Gotta love when the after Christmas sale discounts something I actually want! :)

From what I've always been told, Hot Wheels cars are NOT any specific scale. Yes, they are all fairly close to 1/64, but they are engineered to basically all be the same size.

While in the real world the Kenmeri Skyline dwarfs a 510, in the Hot Wheels world they are the same size.
