This month’s Hemmings Sports & Exotic has a Toyota 2000GT on the cover with the title “Bullet Train.” How appropriate! It emerged from the same boom era as the Shinkansen and made just as big an impact. Besides, more press on the most sought after piece of J-tin in the world can’t be a bad thing. Unless you’re saving up for one, we suppose.

Glad you guys enjoyed that! We always try to get at least one vintage Japanese car into each issue. If you check the index of all our back issues (http://www.hemmings.com/editorial/HSX_index.html), you’ll see we’ve covered Acuras, Datsuns, Hondas, Mazdas, Mitsubishis, Nissans, Toyotas and even a Subaru 360.
If I ever win a lottery, I am so buying one.
We’ve got something in common then. π
i would soooo love one of these
I love the Shelby Racer, I’m parochial to number 23 ( I think the blue looked better )
I wasn’t around then, but still wish Shelby had been able to do more with that car at the time… There might have been more in the US if he had. But unfortunately it wasn’t as competitive as Shelby or Toyota would have liked; that and at the time Japanese cars where still looked down upon through US eyes…. What a pity…
yep i picked that up awhile back. its a really good read and i learned some stuff even about the 2000gt i didnt know
Pretty good article, although it should be noted that you don’t need to be 5’10” or shorter to fit into one. 6 footers fit fine into a 2000GT. I’m not really sure why the author made such a big deal about the size of the cockpit. He should try squeezing into an Ace Cobra without pinning his knees up against the dashboard.
A dollar short and a day late.
The 2000GT is a wonderful car, but the allusion to the shinkansen just falls flat.
Every comparison to the bullet train after the original is just a pale comparison. Once it was done, every other is just a copy of an original idea.
Hemmings is late with their 2000GT comparison.
Top Gear was late with their GTR cross island race.

Toyota should try to make a retro version of the 2000GT.. they need some RWD excitement in their lineup π
Perhaps the Lexus LF-A can take that baton…
