CLASSIC CM: Everything about the 610 Bluebird-U is just sex, sex, sex

Nissan Bluebird-U Datsun 610

What a difference two generations make. 1966 commercials for Nissan’s Bluebird, then of the 410 generation, capitalized on the car’s motorsports prowess at the Safari Rally. The 510‘s adverts were pretty tame as well, just a rundown of its design and features. Then we get to 1971 and the 610 Bluebird-U and any sense of decorum goes flying out the window.

What follows is one of the most sexually suggestive car commercials ever aired. It probably wouldn’t pass censors today, as even this much more recent and comparatively tame Tiida (Versa) ad starring Kim Cattrall was banned (What’s up with Nissan’s marketing department, anyway?). We’d blush just coming up with the words to describe it so it’s probably best if you just watch for yourself, unless you’re at work, in which case the money shot is probably not safe.

    Hillarious! Advertising gold.

  2. Bob says:

I died watching the 610 ad. Amazing.

  3. J.A.C.K says:

    skeet skeet skeet SKEET!

  4. AndyB says:

    Ice cream cone. Lol!
Not sure why that dude is trying to crush that apple though.. Even more confusing is that he is having such a hard time doing it!

  5. Randy says:

    Wow…

So how was the -U in performance, since NOBODY ever seems to mention them? (I know, the various regulations were probably affecting them as much as our cars…)

I like the styling. I vaguely remember seeing a ratty blue one – like, decades ago – with the usual rusted fenders, faded former-paint, etc. I’m pretty sure it was a four-door sedan; black, honeycomb grille, round, amber parking lights in the grille; bigger, chrome bumpers.

    • Matt says:

the U was quite a bit heavier–relatively speaking. they did bump it up to a 2.0L for export markets with more elaborate smog equipment. whatever the case it was never as nimble as the outgoing 510 chassis

    • Randy says:

      Ha – I’m an idiot… It apparently wasn’t the 610 I was remembering; it was a ’73-’77 210… Mostly remembered that grille and “swoopy” body. Wasn’t a 4-headlight front.

      Still a surprising ad.

I guess these were moving toward the luxury side of things, too.

i’ve watched this a few times but just noticed the sunbather’s bikini top pops open

    bra

  7. Dimitri says:

I’ve always loved the 610. Probably my favorite out of all the U.S. 10′ series (Violet, Pulsar, etc). Maybe because it closely resembled the Kenmeri.

    • Matt says:

not only do they share a resemblance, they also share certain parts and even offer a comparable driving experience (aside from the obvious 4cyl vs 6cyl)
