NEWS: Toyota teases MkV Supra

Toyota tweeted a dark image today of what is almost certainly the fifth-generation Supra. After not showing up at the Tokyo, Los Angeles or Detroit motor shows like it was rumored to, it looks as if it will make its public debut next month.

From the teaser image we can see it has the double bubble roof and ducktail of the Toyota FT-1 Concept shown at Detroit way back in 2014. Not seen on the FT-1 or any of the camouflaged test mules in the intervening years is a large GT-style wing. Either this is the Gazoo version or it will debut in race guise before the production car, recalling the dramatic introduction of of the Kenmeri Skyline GT-R in 1972.

Adding to the mix, a user on the SupraMarkV forums posted the specs today, as leaked to Japan’s Best Car magazine, and helpfully put a side-by-side comparison with the MkIV. If the numbers are true, then the MkV will be 80 mm (3.2 in) shorter in wheelbase, 135 mm (5.4 in) shorter overall, 44 mm (1.7 in) wider, 25 mm (1 in) taller, and 74 kg (177 lb) lighter.

There was a recent rumor that the car may not be called the Supra, but that seems to be put to rest according to the caption that accompanied Toyota’s tweet:

THE LEGEND RETURNS
At the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, a modern racing concept signals Toyota’s commitment to bring back to market its most iconic sports car. Get the full scoop on March 6th at 3:45 a.m. EST

Looks like we’ll know more details in less than a month.

I hate the British Mk. whatever. Just speak American and call it a fifth generation, until we know the Toyota designation, like JZA90, or whatever engine they’re going to use.
    Onegai.

What a bizarre thing to get mad about
When I was a kid the Mk. III was just being replaced by the Mk. IV and that’s exaclty what all my (American) magazines called them. You need to let some things go

      • Mark Newton-John says:

Yeah, but no one says the current Corolla is Mk. XII or whatever. Even in Japan the only Mk. X is a separate model, they call it “Mark X, not ten, and remember, the Corona Mark II wasn’t the second generation of Corona.
So we should stop saying AE86 and start saying Mk.VI Corolla (or whatever generation it was)? Uh… NO.

    • Yuri says:

My only gripe is people pronouncing Mk as “Emm-kay” rather than “Mark.”

“From the teaser image we can see it has the double bubble roof and ducktail of the Toyota FT-1 Concept shown at Detroit way back in 2013” 2013, Seriously? Sir Ben I don’t think the FT-1 was appeared at the Detroit auto show in 2013 because the Toyota Corolla Furia concept(which is the 11th gen Corolla)was shown instead of the FT-1 which appeared a year later at the same show…..

  3. Mark Newton-John says:

Toyota brought the FT-1 to Toyotafest a few years ago. If you notice a common theme for Toyota sport cars is the upturned rear quarter window that harkens back to the 2000GT.

  4. Negishi no Keibajo says:

Looks like a Daihatsu Charade De Tomaso before Marketing, Legal, Finance, HR, Safety, and an unspecified “advisor” got a hold of it.

  5. Geoff says:

Maybe this will be the car to get Nissan off their butts about the 2 seat GT market?

    I’m excited.

  6. ahja says:

“At the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, a modern racing *concept*”

Another iiteration of concept I suspect, rather than a production car reveal. Remember the 6 or 7 years worth of FRS concepts before that thing finally became a production car?

  7. Kyle says:

It’s arguable that the 2000gt is Toyota’s “most iconic sports car”. And design wise it is very very close to the 2kgt and far off from any supra. It is still possible it won’t be called the supra.
