NEWS: Nissan to exhibit racing legends, R390 GT1 road car at Monterey

Nissan has announced some details about its plans for the upcoming Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. The event will be a significant milestone, since it is the first time a Japanese marque has headlined the RMMR since its inception in 1974. As such, Nissan is bringing out several cars of historic significance, including the first ever appearance on US soil of the R390 GT1 road car.

Other cars on display will include what design director Alfonso Albaisa calls “beautifully-restored cars of significance,” including John Morton’s BRE Datsun 510, Geoff Brabham’s IMSA championship GTP-ZX, Bob Sharp’s SCCA C-Production-winning Datsun 240Z, the Japan Grand Prix-winning 1969 Nissan R382, and the recently-unveiled GT-R50.

There will be 14 cars in all in the historic display, but on the track will be a different story. Over 50 Nissan and Datsun race cars will fill Laguna Seca, including IMSA champion Steve Millen in his Daytona and Le Mans-winning Nissan 300ZX Turbo, John Morton driving the BRE Datsun 240Z, and Adam Carolla driving Paul Newman’s SCCA National GT-1 championship 300ZX Turbo.

We’ll be there to cover the festivities, so stay tuned. The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion takes place August 23-26.

    Hello JNC and Ben,

RMMR is August 23-26..does this include these Nissans for display as well?
Or are they gonna be on display before or shortly after RMMR?

    Thanks fellas.

Lots and lots of 510 pictures please. Details, up close. Thank you 🙂

R390 GT1 should be something to behold!

  4. This just shows the prestige of Monterey. Road Atlanta is a lot closer to Nissan HQ, but the Heritage Collection only brought out the 510 & GTP cars for the Mitty.

You people attending Monterey are truly lucky. I think the number of Datsuns will also be more than at the MItty.

I love the historics(or whatever they’re called now) and can’t wait the couple of weeks. Got my tickets in the mail yesterday. I’m really excited for the R382, nothing like 2 S20’s connected together.

  6. Don Hopings says:

I saw the GTP car run back in the day at Charlotte (in black and white California Cooler livery with Tony A2Z and Devendorf), and Columbus (2x). That was one BadAss piece when they got everything right!! Lots of power and lots of downforce…

The John Morton 240Z and 510 are the Cindy Crawford’s of the old SCCA race cars. They (she) look (looks) better and better each time I see them (her).

  8. Matt D says:

Don’t forget that the corral parking will be Nissan centered as well. Run by the Z Owners of Northern California group, the corral’s already grown larger than the Turn 3-4 lot allows — so they gave us the island, too.

Well over 100 cars are registered for that corral. Don’t get our own show in Monterey during car week (Touge Heroes Show anyone?), so we’ll just have to make one there at the Historics!

  9. Nigel says:

Very much looking forward to JNC’s coverage.

  10. Danny says:

Are you required to buy tickets before attending or can you just pay at the door?
