MOTORSPORT: John Morton’s 240Z lap at Road Atlanta

The Mitty was this weekend, and Nissan was the featured marque. We’ll have a full report on what it’s like to race at Road Atlanta in a Datsun 240Z coming soon, but for now check out this video of John Morton behind the wheel of his rebuilt BRE 240Z race car.

The car, built by Randy Jaffe from as many parts as could be recovered from the original BRE race car. Our friends at Z Car Garage prepped the car for its return to Road Atlanta, and John served as Grand Marshall at the Mitty. Watch him handle his Z like he never left. You’ll want to turn the volume up for this one.

  1. Not to discount the efforts of Rob’s crew, but the car was actually built and participated at the Ameila Island Concours before it got to the Z Car Garage.

What Rob and his crew did was to install the powertrain to make it worthy of having John Morton drive the car. They do an incredible job of it, too. When the block was ventilated in the first qualifying session on Friday for the Mitty, they took a couple of engines from the owner’s stash of old Parkinson rebuilt motors and got the car on the track (and competitive) by Saturday morning. Mind you, these engines sat untouched for around 40 years! That was incredible! I was blessed with being able to help the team at the Mitty this year, trying to source parts locally as they were taking care of the gremlins that showed up in testing. They are wonderful people to work with, and I look forward to the next opportunity I get to hang out with them.

Here’s a link to my blog post for a photo session the owner let me have with the car last year: https://fiddlingwithzcars.wordpress.com/2017/07/04/bre-240z/

  2. Here’s one of my favorite photos from the weekend. Rob is going over things with John Morton just before sending him out on the track in a 240Z in BRE livery for the first time since probably the 71 Runoffs. https://photos.app.goo.gl/HUvC7EtBWOHcK8q73

I thoroughly enjoyed watching all those Datsun run around the track and meeting John. It was my first Mitty and will be hard to top.
