MINICARS: Tomica Limited Vintage made an FD3S Mazda RX-7 and it looks amazing

We haven’t written about Tomica Limited Vintage in a while, but the collectors’ offshoot of Japan’s most popular diecast cars has been quietly churning out excellent 1:64-scale models of classics for a while. The latest, however, is sure to make waves, because their FD3S Mazda RX-7 is absolutely stunning.

Parent company Tomytec says they are releasing this model on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the original RX-7, which debuted in 1978. The zenki third-gen RX-7 Type R ( is arguably one of the most beautiful cars to come out of Japan, and this model captures it perfectly. It will be available in three iconic colors — Competition Yellow Mica and Silver Stone Metallic for the standard line, and Vintage Red for the special Japanese Car Era edition.

From the separate turn signal lights to the twin exhaust tips, it’s hard to believe the model is the size of a Hot Wheels. Even the side mirrors are included, although the buyer has to install them themselves. Of course, such detail comes at a price. The yellow and silver ones will retail for ¥2,300 each (about USD $23) and the red one will cost ¥2,600 (about USD $26).

That is obviously quite steep, but just look at it! Real FD RX-7s are getting pretty scarce (and expensive) in unmolested form. This is the next best thing. If you prefer an even more special edition, fret not. It appears from reports that a Type RZ is in the works as well.

I’ll take the red over the two other colors…..because the red one is similar to the one’s in Detective Conan driven by a female cop named Miwako Sato

I will pay 23 US. for these, but they will go directly into the display cabinet. Great work Tomica !

  3. Orion Gear says:

I personally like the Yellow & Red RX7 because I feel like their fitting stock colors for the RX7 FD.
