With all the JCCS coverage going on it’s time for east coasters’ yearly grumble session about their lack of clean cars. While it’s true that faded 510s and AE86s are not on every corner there, it’s equally true that when an old Japanese car does appear you can bet it’s going to be dead mint. Case in point: a 1988 Mitsubishi Galant Sigma currently on eBay in Philadelphia.
Completely forgotten when new, these sedans are as rare as uncooked hamburger nowadays. To the uninitiated they may look unspectacular, but these were created by the wide-reaching Triple Diamond Syndicate during the height of the Bubble Economy.
That means fantastically high-tech styling that would look right at home in Black Rain or even Blade Runner. This example has only 38,000 miles and every panel is straight as an arrow on an already angular body. Also, it’s hard to tell from the photos but this is quite possibly a B-pillarless four-door hardtop, which is just rad no matter what.
Naturally, the interior resembles an X-Wing fighter’s cockpit, with a matrix of buttons and horizontal lines. Plus it features Mitsubishi’s trademark monospoke steering wheel.
How can you not love a turn signal stalk that looks like this?
Plus, there are no less than three sideways-facing men’s room stick figures hidden throughout the dashboard, which is sure to make our pal Murilee Martin a happy man.
Offered at $7,995, the seller likely unearthed this gem and is flipping it for a profit, but where else are you going to find such a fine example of Mitsubishi Motors craftsmanship? Wow. What a great car. What is that knob on the right side of the driver’s seat? It looks like possibly a cigarette lighter?
The only thing I see on the right side of the driver seat is the lumbar adjuster. is that what you mean?
Best part: those crushed-velour seats! Too bad they’re dark gray instead of blue or burgundy, but even so they’re a nice antidote to black vinyl in so many ’60s/’70s classics and equally-black and almost as plasticky leather in anything new that’s even slightly optioned-up.
I think they’re more a taupe or mouse-fur color, so slightly more brown than grey.
I absolutely love these cars.
Back in ’87, I passed on a ’86 Galant (not the Sigma) model simply because of a lack of Mitsubishi dealerships in North and South Carolina. I have always wanted one of these but they are practically non existent. Has anyone seen a regular 85-87 Galant in their travels, particularly in my area of the country?
Lastly, is there a particular website or club that I could join that might help me in finding one?

Definitely not a hardtop. If you look closely at the second pic in the post you can see the B-pillar through the windshield, on the driver’s side.
Wouldn’t be surprised if there was a pillarless JDM variant, but sadly this isn’t. 🙁
In New Zealand we got the sigma Turbo inports. A marvelous car that used to crack manifolds and melt pistons haven’t seen one for years.
The Australian version of this car was called the Magna. Worst car ever made in Australia.

I miss both my sigmas after selling them a few years ago.
My first sigma was bought for $400 and all it needed was a battery, granted the front air shock had a slow.leak it was a fun car to.drive with the v6 in it, is swear this thing was faster than most sports cars like the one guy in a.black 2g eclipse turbo found out haha.
My second sigma was a cream puff of a car, funny thing is both of.them were the same dark brown color? Very straight outside no accidents and interior was the best I have seen. All this one needed was a starter and overdrive did not work but it still ran sweet.
These cars are more rare than my 1991 Mitsubishi galant vr4.
