MINICARS: Get humming with NISMO-tune Hot Wheels R33, R34 Skyline GT-Rs

Those of you who stopped by our booth at the 2019 JCCS may have caught a glimpse of some upcoming Hot Wheels. Here’s the deets on two of the most eye-catching models, an R33 and R34 Skyline GT-Rs in NISMO livery.

The first should be hitting the shelves at your local retailers already. It’s the Nissan Skyline GT-R R34 with “Real Rider” rubberized 6-spoke wheels and tires reminiscent of Volk TE37s. It comes as part of a Transporters line with a matching flatbed hauler.

The livery was used on the NISMO S-Tune, R-Tune, and Z-tune cars in the early 2000s. Though considered official, these weren’t factory trim levels. Rather, NISMO would buy lightly used R34 GT-Rs back, give the already potent Wangan blasters a complete performance makeover that included (depending on the tune) engine internals, turbos, suspension, brakes, and aero) and re-sell them as complete cars.

The three levels of tune were for street, race, and an ultimate spec, and ranged from 400 to 500 ps (394 to 493 horsepower). Prices ranged from ¥7 million to ¥17.745 million ($65,000 to $165,000 USD), including the cost of the car itself. It wasn’t cheap, but you were getting a tuned car with the full backing and expertise of the engineers at Nissan’s racing division.

The R33 will be a new premium car for the 2020 Boulevard line. For long-time Hot Wheels collectors this is sort of a homecoming, as the Boulevard series marked the debut of designer Jun Imai‘s own 510 wagon, was the predecessor to the Car Culture series that now includes Japan Historics, Street Tuners, and many others that have contained some incredible Japanese castings.

The detail on both cars is phenomenal, finished in metallic silver with NISMO’s black and red checkered stripes. On the R34, there’s even the NISMO logo on the intercooler, as seen on the real car.

Though they will will arrive in completely different lineups, the two cars are beautifully paired and a glorious tribute to the height of Nissan’s (and Japan’s) tuning epoch. They will be highly sought after for sure.
