Happy Datsun B210 Day from JNC

Everyone’s obsessed with Zs and 510s, but the Datsun B210 is the true hero of the post-oil crisis 70s. This 1977 ad brags about its 50 mpg highway rating, but that didn’t mean the economy car skimped on features. It was available with decadent luxuries like tinted glass, front disc brakes, and a rear defogger in so your panting dog didn’t cloud up the hatch window on your way to your tennis match. When I was in 3rd grade, a neighbor had one of these across the street. Something about those hubcaps always caught my eye. I knew it was a Datsun, but I always remembered by those organic, Alienesque wheels. It’s like someone crushed a can and then tried to straighten it back out.

Hope everyone has a Sunny and Excellent day .

  3. My Uncle Dave, my mom’s little brother, had a B210 in blue. Loved that car. Stick shift, leather-wrapped steering wheel, louvered rear window… Two memories stand out: First, rolling onto the UMBC campus for the 1974 North vs. South college lacrosse All-Star Game with Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition” blasting from the stereo—that song still takes me back to those emerald ballfields. Then, a couple years later, taking laps around the Baltimore Beltway listening to the Hotel California album the day it came out. The car is long gone, and Dave passed away a couple of years ago, but they both live on in my memories. Thanks, JNC, for starting my day with a smile.

Family friends when I was a kid had a B210 just like this, in metallic bright green with tan interior. They must’ve been happy with it, after their first baby they bought an ’81-2 Datsun 210 wagon. After that came one of the first 4-door Isuzu Troopers when they moved away and that was when we lost track of them.

Good luck finding one of these cheap now! Back in the 90’s they could be had for around $2000 AUD, usually alot less. Now they are a niche collectable car and rarely on the road… My grandmother had a coupe one like in the picture with a creamy colour paint, My father had a few over the years as a car for going to work. The gas mileage really was amazing, but they were very slow…
