Car Chase Combat: Toyota Corona vs. Mazda RX-3

If Tuesday’s Subaru-on-Subaru action left you wanting more nostalgic car chase excitement, you’re in luck. Most Japanese films had a manufacturer sponsor that supplied them with cars, so all the main cars – and sometimes even the chase fodder – were usually of the same brand. But 1979’s No Grave for Us featured a multi-marque mix of J-tin doing what they do best!

In this scene our baddie absconds with a bag full of ill-gotten yen in a RT80 Toyota Corona, only to have our hero (played by total badass Yusaku Matsuda) hunt him down in a beautiful Mazda Savanna RX-3. Throw in a Nissan President for good measure and you have one awesome pursuit.

What’s more, the footage seems much more raw. When you can see suspensions bouncing up and down like paddleballs you know these cars are being driven hard.

With a name like Matsuda, you’d think he’d know better than to drive a rotary hard without warming it up properly first!

  2. Vic says:

What a perfectly good waste of a rx-3

  3. After seeing the outcome, I think the last of his concerns was the rotary warm up period. Funny I don’t think anyone with an RX3 now would drive it like they stole it :).

I loved the driver in the RX3’s hair though, a good laugh.

    I drive my RX3 like I stole it… šŸ™‚

Everyone’s bummed about the Mazda. What, no love for the Corona? šŸ˜›

  6. Redsunday says:

Haha love how he runs out and the 3’s sitting there ready for action!

  7. Tony RE10 says:

The Corona got what it deserved…. go the rotor šŸ˜‰

  8. Jimbo says:

Oh man, too bad the RX3 had to go in the water. There should be a law about hurting cars during a movie. At the end of the movie you would see a notice about “No cars were hurt during filming”

Wish I had that RX3 – I’d drive it like I stole it.

  9. Ben says:

Well to be fair these cars were new and plentiful when the movie was made. Still painful to watch though šŸ˜›

nice vid. Those cars could’ve used some sway bars.

  11. Ben says:

Dang, I just noticed a giant Mitsubishi logo appear from nowhere at 2:07, LOL

  12. coupeZ600 says:

Amazing the lack of body damage in the door-to-door section of the vid, except for the headlight, they both look pretty good. Probably wouldn’t what to try this with a Crown Vic Interceptor. And what are they doing popping the hood on the President at 1:10, checking the oil?

  13. gaijinshogun says:

C’mon, nobody mentions the coolest car in the vid! It gets dumped at :45…..you can name it….I know you can! Wait a sec, maybe the coolest thing in the vid is the Dyna that screws up the Corona’s progress.

  14. Ben says:

    Finally, a Toyota fan! šŸ™‚

  15. cirespeed says:

That’s how I drive my corona, off the ground!! like 2:22 YEAH!!! Go.. rona.. Go oh crap not in the lake!
