900,000 Mazda MX-5 Roadsters and Counting

The 900,000th Mazda MX-5 rolled out of Hiroshima last week, extending its lead as the best selling two-seat sports car in history according to the Guinness Book of World Records. The Miata got that title back in 2000 after surpassing 531,890 units. Mazda has a habit of keeping milestone vehicles in its museum in Hiroshima (the 500,000th Evolution Orange car in the image is kept there), but this Copper Red example is headed to a lucky owner in Germany.

To mark the occasion, Mazda released a Special Edition MX-5, available in Sparkling Black Mica or Dolphin Gray Mica, with heaps of special chrome trim and maxxed-out suspension options. Only 750 will be made.

Mazda’s senior managing executive officer in charge of development, Seita Kanai said of the landmark moment, “As we head toward the next production milestone of one million units, Mazda is committed to further evolving the MX-5. We will refine its fun-to-drive character and further enhance its environmental and safety capabilities. As Mazda passes its 91st birthday, we are turning our sights toward our 100th anniversary. In the years ahead, we will continue to cherish the MX-5, alongside its loyal fan base, as the symbol of the Mazda brand.”

I had a 1990 Crystal White Miata B Package from 2008 to 2009. I had to sell because of Army relocation. But I loved that car so much, I found another one while I was deployed listed online. My wife picked up and is currently waiting in the garage for my return from Iraq. It’s a 1990 Crystal White A Package with 54,000 original miles. I couldn’t pass that up.
