VIDEO: KE10 and AE86 shill for 2014 Toyota Corolla

AE86 in 2014 Corolla ad

The latest commercial for the 2014 Toyota Corolla will either make you think Toyota is pretty rad or ruin your entire day. The spot titled “Step Up to Style” starts with cool 60s daddy-os groovin’ with a KE10. Flash forward a couple of decades and an AE86 is starring in Corolla 2: Electric Boogaloo. Fun use of heritage or utter blasphemy? Watch the ad below and sound off in the comments. UPDATE: A longer version has been released featuring a disco E30 and grunge E100!

    Volt Dance fiasco anyone?

Toyota’s trying to hard to shed the beige image, which it’s not going to do with pandering ad campaigns. Look guys, we like dubstep are we cool yet? Leave that for the Scion ads that nobody takes seriously anyway.

  2. J.A.C.K says:

should have segued to the frs/brz/gt86 instead of the fwd econobox corolla 🙁 womp womp.

  3. Nigel says:

Kinda looked like every body did the “oh what a feeling” jump, at the end.

  4. Sideglide says:

Funny, they have an ae86 with J-spec kouki bumpers for a US spec 2014 Corolla. I also don’t think it’s an SR5, just a repaint. The rims look like snowflakes but hard to tell for sure. The front grill appears to either be a US spec. That car doesn’t know where it wants to live.

I like the concept, most people won’t nitpik.

  5. Andrew says:

Just do the whole thing in the 80s and then be like “Yeah the 80s were rad!”

  6. Inline6ness says:

I love this commercial. It’s got nostalgia, it’s fun, and it sells the world’s favorite car to the masses. Toyota didn’t make this commercial to make us JNC nuts feel warm and fuzzy, they made it to continue selling a new Corolla every minute.

    the second car was better

  8. Lukas says:

I wish Toyota Europe would do such commercials. So just be glad Toyota US is using their heritage to bring it to the masses. We can only dream of that here in Europe.

  9. cesariojpn says:

Someone please shoot that kid off the AE86’s roof.

  10. Dave says:

Awesome! Makes me want to go out and buy a new Corolla. (Not really, but it’s certainly better-looking than the outgoing car.) I’m glad Toyota is keying in on their heritage, even (or especially) for their bread-‘n-butter car.

  11. Bart says:

The dude in red at :20 is awesome…

  12. Kevin says:

    YES!

Okay it’s a bit immature, but I’m glad past generations are even being acknowledged. I have been dreaming Toyota will make an 80s style commercial to promote a new vehicle. Remember the 85 Supra ads with Dan Gurney? Fast paced, grainy camera shots, freeze-frame jumping. Imagine that for a 2015 Supra…

  13. Germskee says:

hah I thought it was fun…

  14. invinciblejets says:

Wow just say what I thought was this commercial on tv ..and they changed it!!

It’s exactly the same but instead of the 86 …….prepare for this …it’s bad

    Ok ready?

They put instead of the 86, a 90s scene with some grunge bad and a corolla/Chevy prism/Malibu
    I could not believe it

    Is this a bad dream?

  15. TheGrifCannon says:

The video was going ok until they showed the AE100 series ‘rolla…those things are as bland as a bread sandwich and if Toyota wanted to step up the cars style history, then that was the wrong one to pick. However still a fun ad and good to see the company remembering its roots.

  16. El Destructo Inc says:

Umm, hasn’t Honda already done “through the decades” with the Civic last year?

  17. Andrewzuku says:

Soundgarden in a Toyota commercial? Heck yes!

  18. AndyB says:

Liked it all the way til the 2014 part. Just lame with all the confetti and crap. No wonder I like JNCs, the new stuff is just lame… (As this commercial shows..)

  19. Martin Brandan says:

I’ve gotta say, the music and dancing for the “today” segment was really lame, and I’m 19. Everything else was awesome though!
