VIDEO: Car Craft Boon’s Kazuhiro Furukawa explains what it means to be a Kanjo Racer

Car Craft Boon - Kanjo Hondas

This isn’t the type of thing we usually cover on JNC. Sure, the video spends a large amount of time spotlighting a “hellaflush” EK Civic, but Kanjo racing is a deep rooted part of Japan’s โ€” and particularly Osaka’s โ€” car culture. Plus, there’s also an EF whose owner wears a scary-ass hockey mask. It’s understandable why these illegal street racers would want to keep their identities secret though. As Car Craft Boon founder Kazuhiro Furukawa explains, racers have crashed, been arrested, and died on the Osaka loop. Why do they do it then? Just watch this video from the always excellent XCar and you’ll understand.

I think I get it… It is a risky thing you can do when you’re young. I remember doing some risky things on public roads when I was younger. I wouldn’t recommend anyone use the public roads as a test circuit but I guess that’s what I was doing… I think more people need to push young people to do things on closed circuits though. Like he was kind of hinting at the end of the video.. I’ve heard plenty of stories of talented folks ruining/ending their life and other bystanders in car accidents due to racing on public roads.

Now I’m trying to unimagine seeing someone pull up next to me in a hockey mask like the EF owner. That’d be freaky.

“…the thrill was great but I was also very young at the time.” That pretty much sums it up. We were all young and did stupid stuff that we thought was cool because we lived through it. Some of those habits, and the adrenaline rush that comes with it, revisits us from time to time. But if some fool did what I use to do and hurt my kids… . “I was once young, but now I am old.” Thanks for video JNC. It’s good to see us old farts up on the screen every now and then.

As an EK owner I understand where these guys are coming from.
The Civics I have had over the years taught me how to drive also.
(I mean really drive, in a ADVAN 509 & four point harness kind of way).

Only the Japanese could do something so wreckless and stupid and manage to not sound like dicks about it. While I don’t condone the behavior, I can understand the desire behind it.

I’m currently staying in Osaka and I can definitly confirm there are races and many many cars around the city that look ready for a “circuit day” or in this case – late night Kanjo battles.. In fact right now ( great timing!!! ) as I type, also very late the night before this I could hear street races going on not too far in the distance from my hotel. We are staying just inside “the loop” they mentioned. I so badly want to see where the noise is coming from, but like finding the end of a rainbow I am content sitting by the window and listening to the cars scream through the concrete jungle into the night, thus satisfying my curiosity for the Osaka street racer scene.

Thanks for sharing, I really enjoy these type of bio-short clips…. yes even when on holiday, I still find time for my regular JNC fix. keep up the good work! ๐Ÿ˜‰
