Friday Video: KPGC10 Nissan Skyline GT-R vs Mazda Savanna RX-3

Last week we saw a meeting of some Japan’s best road-going GT cars. This Friday let’s look at two no-limit track machines. The KPGC10 Nissan Skyline GT-R and the Mazda Savanna RX-3 are old rivals, and Best Motoring brought them back to Fuji Speedway for a sonorous reunion. Enjoy the sights and sounds after the jump.

We already have a Hotwheels Hakosuka, and it won’t be hard to find a gravity track…

All we need is the RX3!!!

(Yet another not-so-subtle hint to jun Imai and Mattel)….

PS. Make the LATE MODEL RX3… Tomica released the early version…

  2. E-AT_me says:

good lord! can someone put a suspension on that RX3? that thing is bobbing and weaving more than a light-weight!!

  3. 20B says:

Having seen the real time videos of the races including the RX3 wins, this RX3 portrayed is not one of the Original white and green RX3s.
This one ( in the video ) is a sad example, more like “roasting” the reputation Mazda has, because there is no way the RX3 in the video can compete in any way. The suspwension is wobbly, the suspension is tall with a lot of clearance above the ground, and the engine is just ba stock one, with stock ignition, intake and exhaust systems.
Shame on this video, at least an effort should be made to get some translation, perhaps credits, I am sure something along these lines ( the RX3 being just a decoy, I do not think the RX3 in the video was presented as a real racer car )…was being said by the driver. W/o proper translation, more harm than good is achieved by presenting a video that at first sight misrepresents what competition Mazdas are all about.
My 2 cents, perhaps 3 cents.

if only the 30-degree bank was still in use…

  5. Dutch 1960 says:

From what I’ve seen, the early Mazda (R100, RX2, RX3) racers were always rough around the edges, handlingwise, especially in complex maneuvers. Nissans usually were much better in the curves. When the RX7 came out, the handling was transformed.
I too was disappointed to see this RX3 in the video, I was expecting a more highly and competently prepared car.

  6. Johnny A. says:

RX-3: dual distributor and factory air-cleaner VS. what they showed for the nissan… 🙁

  7. GT-R380 says:

Really only a fair comparison of silhouettes! As much as I love the sound of that particular KPGC10, it is simply too far removed from the original race cars to give a fair comparo…. If my memory serves me correctly some of the mods include; stroked motor,Bn R32 gearset, etc All very nice but not something you could use for a period correct battle!
The RX3 is a great little beast as well, but seems to be a hotrodded street version rather than the flame spitting race car of the early seventies. Ok to show “this shape battled with that shape” I s’pose?

  8. Nate says:

That was definitely not a racing Rx-3, it had the stock air cleaner, and wasn’t running the fire breathing peripheral port engine. The fact that this car Mazda was almost silent was a good indication that it was not a competition car, which are known to be ear-splitting loud!

  9. Joey Lang says:

A competition RX3 uses a PP engine w a 51mm weber downdraft and is really loud. I would know , have been involved with Team Retro Racing , they have seven rotory cars w different engine set-ups & the RX3 still beats cars 40years newer. This car doesnt look set up as RX3’s are know for there incredible handling.
