Back in the day, Mazda had a works team competing in WRC, which was (and still is) the world’s most prestigious rally championship. The RX-7 fought with the mighty group B Peugeot 205 T16s and Audi Quattros. Nissan, Toyota and Mitsubishi also participated, with the 240RS, Celica Twin Cam Turbo and Starion respectively. It’s amazing to see how versatile the RX-7 was – you couldn’t do that with a modern day sportscar. Or could you? 🙂

In 1984 & 1985 Mazda actually competed in Group B with the RX7.
It was the most powerful normally-aspirated 2wd car competing. Using a 13B it produced 300 bhp. It was probably the least complex car in Group B, which was evident in its reliability.
The 7’s best WRC placing (for manufacturers) was in 1985 when it managed 10th with 22 points. Not bad considering the wild rides that were out there in Group B at the time! Mazda then turned its attention to the 323 which it ran in Group A with 4wd.
Apparently, Rod Millen developed a 4wd version – any info on that?
