Friday Video: Mitsubishi Kei Car vs. Mustang II

Perhaps the Skyline vs. Cougar video from two weeks ago was a bit too much excitement for your delicate sensibilities. If so, this week’s video is another Japan vs. Detroit matchup that flexes considerably less muscle. In 1985’s My Lucky Stars, a Mitsubishi Minica kei car chases down, of all things, a Ford Mustang II!

That’s right, the red-headed stepchild of the Mustang family tree was actually a hit in Japan, where the Mustang I was just too wide for its narrow streets. As a side note, if anyone is yearning for Mustang II models, focus your search on Japanese model kits and old Tomicas.

Back to the chase. Okay, so the star cars themselves aren’t that exciting, but as they cat-and-mouse it through an unnamed Japanese town (which for some reason has white picket fences), there are plenty of Toyota Corollas, Carinas, and Nissan Violets used as chase fodder. The bad guys – well, we assume they’re bad because one of them is wearing an eye patch and they’re being pursued by Jackie Chan – even ram a Mazda Familia and a Mitsubishi Galant. What background J-tin you can spot?

I always put ramps in front of my Picket fences.

Was the driver of the Kei car Jackie Chan, he had that Mitsubishi Rally driver thing going.

Wow – that was great! Was that really Jackie Chan? The stunts were awesome, especially the one where the red car goes over the truck. I hate to admit it, but I actually like the Mustang II. I’m at Mazda fan, but I think they are kinda cool in a 70’s way.

Two blocks away someone owns a Mustang II, which is quite unusual for the Netherlands. πŸ˜‰
It looks just as factory stock as this one and believe me: if you see that car drive it drives just like the speed up parts of this video! πŸ˜€

I did spot a TE47 Trueno at 58 seconds, a Mitsubishi Cordia somewhere on the highway at 2:01 and a Nissan Z31 after they jump over the fence. πŸ™‚

Funny the two door Carina(I think?) that Chan slides into the quarter panel of appears a few shots before that with the quarter panel already bashed in.

I dont put ramps before my picket fences Drew, I must live at that last house πŸ™‚

  8. Yep that was Jackie Chan

Movie was called “Fuk sing go jiu” (sounds a bit rude doesn’t it)

That was sick! I love how the bad guy does a dive roll over the stang hood at the start, and how jackie plowed the stang at the end…

  10. Ben says:

lol, yeah… was it really necessary to slam into the mustang at the end?

Killer!! What was that green car that he rear-ends? My wife had a ’64 1/2 Mustang convertible in high school, and when she came out of Target one day and saw me drooling over a white with blue stripes Mustang II, just like the one Farrah drove in “Charlie’s Angels”, she asked,”What the Hell kind of car is that?” When I told her, she dismissively said, “I used to own a Mustang, and that isn’t one!” Good thing she didn’t make the Farrah/Mustang connection.

    Was a nice 1977 323 2 door in there too πŸ™
